A rare figurative stone sculpture, from the Kissi People (17TH C), Sierra Leone, West Africa.
Relics of the past work their way into the present for those who look hard enough…or are just plain lucky. Some of the luckiest are members of the Kissi tribe.
Stone statues known as Kissi, may surface as farmers manually hoe their fields.
These rare pieces are known to represent an ancestral spirit, a mediator between the living and the divine.
Another school of thought suggests it represents a spirit governing crops, an effigy placed in a shrine to insure a good harvest.
Still another suggests it was used to keep evil spirits away. It’s impossible to say exactly why these statues were created centuries ago, but. Ancestor worship was common among the Kissi tribe and statues were regularly presented with offerings by village headmen.
All sorts of devices were used to ward off witchcraft and counteract malevolent spirits.
This superb and highly characteristic example measures 3 inches in width by 10 inches in in height.
Although we are not an expert in this field, and this piece has not been appraised, it is rather difficult to find an appraiser that knows about these statues and their history, we have tried to have it done. In our area there is little to not an expert who knows the history about the KISSI tribe unfortunately.
It does shows wear consistent with age. Importantly though, it is an intact piece and comes on a specially designed, hand-made stand for display. it would make a fine collector’s piece for anyone involved in African art.
This stunning piece weighs 7 lbs (6.94) There is a hole near the navel. Believed to be there as they would pour precious metals into the hole for offering or spells.

This piece came from a lady who was a poet and author whose family had several items from Sierra Leone. This being one of them. Please do not hesitate to reach out for any questions. We do our best to accurately describe the items as accurate as possible. This is one of my absolute favorite pieces, and a very heavy piece.
This is believed to be an antique stone sculpture
from an ANCESTRAL SPIRIT KISSI SIERRA LEONE W. AFRICA tribe. circa 17TH C. However, to find an appraiser now a days who knows about this in our area is not available. These pieces are rare and need to be seen in person to appraised.
